Welcome to the Volta NYC Nonprofit Digital Equity Blog

Nonprofit work in New York City moves fast. Small business owners are trying to keep the lights on, students are trying to build experience, and the digital world keeps shifting under everyone’s feet.

That gap is exactly what Volta NYC was created to close.

On this blog, we’ll share practical, no‑fluff guidance on topics like:

  • How neighborhood businesses can use simple, high‑impact digital tactics
  • What a modern, accessible website actually needs (and what it doesn’t)
  • How to think about SEO, Google Maps, and reviews without getting overwhelmed
  • Ways students can build real portfolios while serving their communities

Why this blog exists

Volta NYC is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects student teams with NYC small businesses. Together, they work on websites, social media, grants, and more — all at no cost to the business.

If you run a local business, you’ve probably been pitched expensive marketing packages that don’t feel realistic. Our goal here is the opposite: show you what’s possible with clear, concrete steps and real examples from across the city.

If you’re a student, you’ll see the behind‑the‑scenes of how real client projects come together: from scoping a website to planning a content calendar to writing your first grant.

What you can expect

Over time, we’ll publish posts that:

  • Break down real projects our student teams ship
  • Explain digital concepts in plain language, not jargon
  • Highlight tools and workflows that are realistic for busy founders
  • Share lessons learned from dozens of businesses across NYC neighborhoods

If you want to understand who we are before diving into the articles, start with the overview on our homepage at voltanyc.org.

Who this is for

  • Small business owners who need a clearer path through websites, social media, and grants
  • Students who want real‑world experience in digital, marketing, finance, or operations
  • Community partners who care about digital equity and economic opportunity

If that sounds like you, you’re in the right place.

This first post is just a welcome. The next ones will dive into specific, actionable topics — from “what your first nonprofit website should include” to “how to clean up your business listings in an afternoon.”

Stay tuned.
